MCR parades to No. 1 UK single

While the Killers grab Britain's top-selling album for a second week, emo champs surge to top of singles chart.

Emo frontrunners My Chemical Romance scored a dramatic No. 1 single on the UK charts, climbing from No. 23 with Welcome to the Black Parade (Warner Bros.). The Killers, meanwhile, started a second week at the top of the album chart with Sam's Town (Vertigo).

My Chemical Romance's previous best showing on the British charts was a No. 19 ranking for the 2005 single "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)." The new track is the lead song from the band's third studio set, The Black Parade, out in the UK and internationally October 23 and a day later in North America.

The other big climber in the new singles top 10 was Beatfreakz' cover of Rick James' "Superfreak" (Data), which climbed from its download-only debut at No. 43 last week to No. 7 following its physical release. It's the group's second successful Motown cover of the year, having reached No. 3 in the UK in May with a version of Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me."

The only other significant activity in the upper echelons of the singles chart was a new entry at No. 20 for singer/songwriter James Morrison's "Wonderful World" (Polydor), the follow-up to his debut hit "You Give Me Something." Both tracks are on the platinum-certified (300,000 units) former No. 1 album Undiscovered, which this week moves back into the top ten, 12-8, in its 11th chart week.

The Killers' album stayed ahead of Scissor Sisters' former No. 1 Ta-Dah (Polydor), which moved back 3-2, while Razorlight (Vertigo) also jumped back 4-3. Roadrunner rock quartet Trivium's The Crusade arrived at No. 7. The Ultimate Luther Vandross (J) came in at No. 12 and Belfast-born Connie Fisher's Favourite Things (RUG/Polydor) at No. 14. Fisher last month won the BBC series How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria, a nationwide talent search to find an artist to play Maria Von Trapp in the production of The Sound of Music at the London Palladium.

Evanescence opens at No. 1 on the European Top 100 Albums chart with The Open Door (Wind-Up), after chart-topping starts in Germany and Switzerland. Scissor Sisters lead Eurochart Hot 100 Singles for a second week with "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'."
