The UK rapper--real name Mike Skinner--is putting together a 20-minute video for an as-yet-untitled new track that would top out at 20 minutes, besting Jacko's long-held record of longest music video for the 13-minute "Thriller."
The video, directed by video maker Alistair Siddons, is set to premiere on MTV August 1, as part of MTV's 25th anniversary celebration. The video was shot specifically for the MTV birthday.
It was largely shot by five MTV viewers who were given a video camera and told to shoot whatever they liked. The strategy is similar to the one used by the Beastie Boys for their concert documentary, Awesome: I F****** Shot That!.
The footage includes a week on the trail of Stratchclyde Police in Glasgow, Scotland, as well as a spoof about cheerleading, an investigation of Bigfoot, and a probe by a filmmaker looking to determine if she is the clumsiest person in the UK.
"I have been blown away by creativity and imaginations of the young people involved," Skinner said in a statement. "We have watched hours of videos in order to find the most interesting and intriguing content for this epic work."
Siddons has previously made videos for the Mystery Jets, Kano, Roots Manuva, and The Streets.
"Although it's our 25th birthday, it's important to remember that we wouldn't have lasted 25 minutes without great, creative music videos and our brilliant, open-minded viewers," an MTV spokesperson said in a statement. "So it makes sense to mark our birthday by giving viewers the chance to make their own, special music video."
