iTunes, Coke ink promo deal

Soft-drink giant will give away vouchers for 70 million free songs on its drinks in Europe and will promote Apple's music store on its Web site.

After first choosing Pepsi, Apple now chooses Coke.

Or Maybe both.

Coke+iTunes Coke+iTunes

Apple said today that it has inked a promotional partnership with Coca-Cola in Europe, with Coke agreeing to include vouchers for 70 million free songs on iTunes--more than a third of the total number of downloads iTunes has sold in Europe to date--on its drinks. Coca-Cola will also promote iTunes on its Web site.

"We're excited to announce this partnership with Apple," Coca-Cola EU exec Dominique Reiniche said in a statement. "Together we are creating a unique and exciting platform that gives young people a voice and allows them to refresh their music experience every day."

Under the new deal, Coca-Cola will include codes for free iTunes downloads on its drinks in the UK and Germany inside packs of Coke and Diet Coke, and later Austria and Switzerland. The promotion will begin in mid-August and run for six weeks, with a five-song limit per person. In September, Coke will be giving away an iPod and 50 songs from iTunes every hour for eight weeks in Germany on its Web site there.

It is unclear how the iTunes-Coca-Cola deal impacts Apple's prior partnership with Pepsi or whether the deal with Coca-Cola could be extended to the US. That deal saw 100 million songs given away in the US via Pepsi drinks. As previously reported, Coca-Cola recently closed its own music download store.
