MTV Latin Awards go bottom up

On a night that saw Shakira, Daddy Yankee, Julieta Venegas, and Panda take home awards, Robbie Williams steals the show.

The tongue is the prevailing theme for the MTV Latin America Music Awards, with winners receiving tongue-shaped awards.

Daddy Yankee Daddy Yankee

But at the 2006 edition of the awards last night at the Palacio de los Deportes in southern Mexico City, the backside of Robbie Williams stole the show.

Williams, who took home the award for best international pop artist last night, mooned the crowd of around 10,000 people during his performance of his song "Rock DJ."

Alternative rock band Panda was the big winner, taking home awards for best band, best alternative artist, and newcomer of the year.

Reggaeton star Daddy Yankee won the night's big prize for artist of the year, telling Reuters afterwards that his music was no passing fad. "Reggaeton made the change in music," he said. "Reggaeton is here to stay, that's what people showed us."

Shakira Shakira

Colombian singer Shakira took home the song of the year for "Hips Don't Lie" featuring Wyclef Jean from her second English-language album, Oral Fixation Vol. 2. Mexican singer and accordion player Julieta Venegas' six nominations turned into just a single win for best performer of the year. Mexican band Mana won video of the year and best rock artist, plus a special award to honor their two decades in the music business.

The show was hosted by members of the band Molotov and Mexican actress Ana de la Reguera, who starred in the movie Nacho Libre. The event marked MTV's return to Mexico after Hurricane Wilma ruined last year's ceremony just hours before it was to begin on a pristine Caribbean beach. This year's ceremony is the first to take place outside Miami.

"MTV finally understood that Miami is not Latin America," said presenter and actor Diego Luna.
