Apple says its iTunes store has sold a million downloads in fewer than 20 days as company hunts for more content, sending its shares up more than 5 percent.
Apple sought to answer the question on everyone's minds today, saying its iTunes online service has sold 1 million videos in under 20 days.
The company said the news made it clear it is confident that there is indeed a market for paid video downloads--iTunes charges $1.99 per video download--and it's looking to add more content to its catalog of 2,000 music videos, Pixar short films, and ABC and Disney Channel TV shows.
"Selling one million videos in less than 20 days strongly suggests there is a market for legal video downloads," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a statement. "Our next challenge is to broaden our content offerings, so that customers can enjoy watching more videos on their computers and new iPods."
The company added the video catalog to iTunes in conjunction with the much-anticipated October 12 unveiling of the video-ready iPod with a 2.5-inch color screen.
The announcement immediately sent shares up more than 5 percent, although they dipped 61 cents in after-hours trading to $56.98.
Apple said videos by Michael Jackson, Fatboy Slim, and Kanye West topped the list of most-downloaded videos, as did episodes of popular ABC shows Desperate Housewives and Lost and Pixar short films For the Birds and Boundin.'
