MP3 News Breakers: Britney, TomKat, Tom Petty, the Streets

David Gilmour takes swipe at the Stones; Britney and K-Fed's wedding invite heads to eBay; are Tom and Katie courting Idol runner-up as wedding singer?; Tom Petty mulls lawsuit against Red Hot Chili Peppers; the Streets to run NYC Marathon.

Gilmour takes swipe at Stones' omni-touring

One aging rocker took a verbal swipe at a set of other geriatric rockers this week. Pink Floyd guitarist/frontman David Gilmour, on tour in support his of his solo album, On An Island, was asked by the Daily Telegraph about the ever-touring ways of the Rolling Stones. He's apparently not fond of them. "I think it's ridiculous, actually," he told the paper. "Mick and Keith should get a life. It's like a strange, sexual compulsion. How much do they need? I think a lot of it is the applause. It's a powerful drug, 50,000 people appearing to adore you. I'm a big Stones fan, but they haven't done anything that matches their earlier stuff in years. As Bob Dylan shows, it doesn't have to be that way. He can still come up with material that is completely new and interesting."(5:00 pm)

Britney-K-Fed wedding invite up on eBay

The invite and candle. The invite and candle.

Didn't get your invite to the Britney Spears-K-Fed wedding in 2004? Although the breakup buzzards are already surrounding the dynamic duo, 24/7 Auctions has put an invitation for the couple's nuptials up for auction on eBay, with a starting price of $999.99. The winner will also get a candle with the happy couples' initials on it. The listing indicates that 24/7 is acting on behalf of a guest from the wedding who put them up for bid, and 24/7 vouches for the authenticity of the items.

In unrelated but equally hilarious Britney-K-Fed news, the "Popozao" rapper ("Fire!") told US magazine that he wants his children to work in fast-food joints. "My kids are going to have to learn what a real job is, what life is. You don't have it easy with me. Period. My kids are going to work at Taco Bell, dammit." Spoken like a true, up-from-the-bootstraps success story.(11:45 a.m.)

Idol runner-up rumored to be in demand from TomKat, Spielberg

Katharine McPhee Katharine McPhee

Katharine McPhee may have been bested by gray-haired soul machine Taylor Hicks in the latest round of American Idol, but the rumor mill is rife with reports that McPhee could be in line to sing at the wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. The Scientology duo reportedly asked McPhee to sing at their wedding after Holmes met McPhee at Los Angeles' Church of Scientology, where the singer allegedly attended courses with her boyfriend. According to Hollywood.com, McPhee has denied that she is a Scientologist, saying only that she attended a course with a now ex-boyfriend. Film director Steven Spielberg has also reportedly contacted McPhee to discuss a possible future in films.(10:30 a.m.)

Tom Petty reportedly mulling lawsuit against Chili Peppers

Did the Red Hot Chili Peppers rip key sections of their smash single "Dani California" straight from Tom Petty's 1993 song "Mary Jane's Last Dance"? That's the word from the New York Post, which quotes sources close to the legendary rocker as saying that Petty is mulling a lawsuit against the LA funk-rock quartet. The controversy was first stirred up by Delaware radio DJ Dan Gaffney, who posted audio samples of the two songs on his station's Web site. "The chord progression, the melody, the tempo, the key, the lyrical theme, they're identical," Gaffney wrote on the site. Petty spokesperson told the Post, "I am well aware of this situation. [The two songs] certainly do sound similar, don't they? I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Tom doesn't have a comment on this at all. I have no idea if he is going to sue the Chili Peppers, and am not prepared to make a comment on that." Producer Rick Rubin recorded both "Mary Jane's Last Dance" with Petty and "Dani California" with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. (10:00 a.m.)

The Streets is taking it to the streets...of New York

The Streets The Streets

Mike Skinner and long-distance running are two things not often mentioned in the same sentence, but according to a post on the rapper's blog, The Streets is going to run in this year's New York City Marathon November 5. Skinner is sponsored by Reebok, which apparently served as the impetus for the decision. "Spoke to Reebok about things, and I've decided to run the New York Marathon. I know it seems a bit long but if people do it dressed as milk cartons it can't be that hard, right?" The race, which hits all five NYC boroughs before finishing in Central Park, will also feature seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong in this year's field. (9:30 a.m.)
