Solitaire is a German ensemble centered largely around Elmar Schulte and Rudiger Gleisberg. (Steve Roach has also been involved with Schulte.) On Nocturnes, the lineup is Schulte, Gleisberg, Amir Baghiri, Danae, Adda Schade, and Studze. This ensemble shows tremendous diversity on this disc. And that makes for some uneven listening. There are eight tracks, two of which border on techno. The other six tracks are deep tribal ambience with minimalist textures and atmospheric timbres; that is what Solitaire does best. The two techno tracks are throwaways. Focusing on the tribal tracks, this CD will appeal to fans of TUU, Bill Laswell, and Brain Laughter.
