White Stripes win court case

Producer had sued the rock duo for royalties on its first two studio albums, claiming he helped define the band's sound.

Calling it a "classic shakedown," the White Stripes prevailed yesterday in a lawsuit filed against them by a producer who said he'd helped define the band's raw, lo-fi blues sound.

A federal jury ruled that Jack and Meg White won't have to share royalties with producer Jim Diamond, who worked on the band's first two albums at his Ghetto Recorders studio in Detroit. Diamond had alleged that he wasn't fairly compensated and that he was as equally responsible for the Stripes' sound as the two band members.

In US District Court in Detroit, an eight-person jury deliberated for only 20 minutes before returning with a verdict that rejected Diamond's claims.

"This was a classic shakedown," the band said in a statement after the verdict was read. "They expected us to settle but we refused to back down. It took the jury less than 20 minutes to figure out what this case was really about."

"This decision protects musicians and original authors of copyright from opportunists trying to take advantage of hard working, creative artists in the community. We are grateful the jury saw through Diamond's claims and ruled accordingly."

Diamond was listed as coproducer on the Stripes' self-titled debut in 1999, and was credited as sound mixer on 2000's De Stijl. The band said it had paid him $35 an hour for time at his studio.
