Jessica gets personal on single

Epic Records rolls out promotion allowing fans to buy custom versions of Simpson's new single, "A Public Affair."

Hoping to have the breathy vocals of Jessica Simpson directed at you by name?

You're in luck.

Jessica does the emMaxim/em thing. Jessica does the Maxim thing.

The pop singer, actress, former reality-show star, and ex of Nick Lachey said today that fans can buy and download customized versions of her new single, "A Public Affair." The promotion, dubbed Custom Cuts, inserts the buyer's name into the lyrics of the song three different times--as long as the name is one of the 500 available.

Simpson's label, Epic Records, came up with the concept and is selling the download at Simpson's Web site and through Yahoo Music starting next Tuesday. Fans can also enter a contest to win a customized download of the single.

Epic is likely hoping to boost the profile of "A Public Affair," which has been stuck in the bottom end of the Billboard Top 40 since its release two weeks ago. The song also has taken quite a bit of heat for its sonic resemblance to the '80s-era Madonna hit "Holiday."

The Brett Ratner-directed video for "A Public Affair" debuts on MTV July 19, with the album of the same name dropping August 29. The video features appearances by Eva Longoria, Christina Applegate, Ryan Seacrest, Christina Milian, Andy Dick, and Maria Menounos.
