John Legend lets fans play DJ

R&B singer is teaming with Verizon Wireless to let its subscribers listen to snippets of two new songs and pick which one to release to radio.

Grammy Award-winning singer John Legend will let his fans play disc jockey by allowing them to choose which song from his upcoming album to release to radio.

The management consultant-turned-R&B soloist said he was curious to know which of the two tracks--"Show Me" and "Heaven Only Knows"--fans will pick.

"At the end of the day you got to rely on your taste and your instinct the most, but it's nice to know what the fans really like," Legend told Reuters.

Legend and his label, Sony BMG, are teaming up with Verizon Wireless to let fans on the wireless network choose the song after they listen to excerpts of the two on their cell phones.

Record labels have been experimenting with new ways to keep fans tuned in to their stars as traditional radio faces greater competition for listening time from digital music players and Internet music channels.

The competition runs through October 13, and the album hits Web stores on October 24.

Legend, who won three Grammys in 2005 for his Get Lifted debut album, said he liked taking part in the promotion and distribution of his music nearly as much as creating it.

"I guess it's my background in business," he said. "I've looked at myself as the CEO of John Legend Inc. No one cares as much as I do about my project."
