The perfect soundtrack to a pill-crazed romp through L.A.'s dirtiest and lowest whorehouses, 13 Above the Night is a record as much about style as substance. But, then again, that's all that it really aspires to be. Reveling in dark sexuality, drug use, and the occult, it conjures up the spirit of the lost of America's cities remarkably. Celebrating the surface level as it does, it is difficult to listen to this record with anything close to a critical ear. It is a loud, unsubtle album that is nevertheless danceable and seductive. The production team of Buzz McCoy and Groovie Mann pair percolating synth grooves and techno rhythms with buzzing guitars and almost R&B-style female background singers. Heavily-processed lead vocals slither in and out of the tracks, emerging to spit venomous and cryptic lines such as "killed his taste in switchblades" (from "Delicate Terror"). Creepy vocal samples play a prominent role in My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult's music, in much the same way that they are used by White Zombie. The entire album holds together quite well, with each track having compelling moments. Fellow traveler Lydia Lunch shows up for the swinging "Dirty Little Secrets," which provides perhaps the greatest view into the Thrill Kill Kult world-view, with its seductive vocals that are less the come-on of a woman to her beloved than the desperate plea of a washed-up porn star turning tricks for heroin money. Hip-hop score for Fight Night 3
EA says next round of top boxing game will feature tracks from Dilated Peoples, Obie Trice, Atmosphere, and Consequence.
Hip-hop is the undisputed heavyweight of Fight Night Round 3's soundtrack. Updated info reveals that the game will ship February 20.
Ask any boxer, and he or she will tell you that the sport is all about rhythm and timing. In fact, it's like a dance. However, the intensity inside the ring doesn't fit zydeco or country-and-western tunes. Publisher Electronic Arts knows this and has released information on the music that will be featured in its upcoming boxing game, Fight Night Round 3.
As expected, based on previous Fight Night games, gamers will be bobbing and weaving to up-and-coming hip-hop artists. Included on the list is Detroit native and Slim Shady's pal Obie Trice, Slug's collective Atmosphere, and West Coast crew Dilated Peoples. The creation of an all-hip-hop soundtrack means the music of cover athlete Oscar de la Hoya will not be in the game. EA has also settled on a release date for the game. Though the game's Web site and an announcement at CES said Fight Night Round 3 would be released on Valentine's Day, EA will now ship all versions on another holiday, Presidents' Day, February 20.
Fight Night Round 3 will appear on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PSP. The T for Teen-rated game will retail for $59.99 on the Xbox 360 and for $39.99 on all other platforms. For more info on the game, step into the ring with GameSpot's recent hands-on preview.
