Info

For Return to X, Ian Simmonds picks his way through jazz and techno, with a host of '60s spy music influences and enough good ideas to pack at least a pair of LPs. Though his repetitive bass figures and overt swing-jazz imitations make the first two tracks a bit bland, he's far better off later on when leaning toward dance and film music, as on the electro-tinged "No Bamboo" and "Alvin's Blues." "Ocean Hill" is another standout, with an atmosphere of wariness culled from an assortment of deep beats, paranoid clarinet lines, and the spider-thin chords of a spinet. Whether summoning the spirit of John Barry or Lonnie Liston Smith, Simmonds proves an adept producer of the postmodern vision of jazz fusion. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

Eminem to return with mix tape

Multiplatinum rapper dispels retirement rumors with The Re-Up, dedicated to slain D12 rapper and Shady sidekick Proof and including tracks with 50 Cent and G-Unit.

With multiplatinum rapper Jay-Z announcing the end of his three-year "retirement" this week, Eminem is dispelling retirement rumors of his own by prepping the release of a mix tape that will serve as his return to the rap game at the end of a tumultuous 2006.

Eminem Eminem

The CD, dubbed The Re-Up, will hit stores October 30 and will be hosted by Eminem and mix tape specialist DJ Whoo Kid. Eminem will feature on several tracks, including "Things Need to Change" with fellow D12 member Bizarre. The track is dedicated to rapper and Eminem sidekick Proof, who was gunned down in a violent, reportedly drunken altercation at a Detroit nightclub in April, and will likely address the violence in hip-hop. D12 also recorded a tribute to Proof titled "Last Words."

The album also includes performances from 50 Cent, G-Unit, Obie Trice, D12, and verses recorded by Proof before he died. It also features several popular hip-hop songs from the past year, including the remix of Rick Ross' "Hustlin'" featuring Jay-Z and Busta Rhymes' "I'll Hurt You" featuring Eminem.
