Crash kills S. African pop star

Blonde singer who brought the country's "kwaito" style of hip-hop to a wider audience dies in a single-car crash near Johannesburg.

South African pop star Lebo Mathosa, known for her platinum blonde hair and electrifying "kwaito" hip-hop stage shows, died in a car crash Monday after her driver lost control of their car on a highway near Johannesburg, her manager said.

"Unfortunately, Lebo was killed in a car accident in the early hours of this morning," Linzy Cowley told the SAPA news agency. "We send our condolences to her family and friends."

Mathosa, 29, died at the scene of the crash after the car hit a steel barrier on the highway and rolled five times before hitting a tree.

Police told the Independent newspaper that the 20-year-old driver, who has not been named, is still in a "state of shock" on Monday and had no visible injuries from the accident. The driver was not tested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs because he did not display any abnormal behavior, police said.

Mathosa rose to fame in 1994 as a singer and dancer for the award-winning group Boom Shaka and went solo in 2000 with the album Dream. In 2004 her album Drama Queen topped local charts, and she was a featured performer in the 2005 launch of MTV's Africa music channel, MTV Base.

Mathosa was nominated for a Music of Black Origin (MOBO) award in 2006 and also appeared in several South African television soap operas.
