Andrew Lloyd Webber, in digital
Composer's catalog, including songs from Evita, Phantom of the Opera, and Cats, will be made available in digital download stores through Universal Music.
For lovers of show tunes, this is better than Cats.
Phantom of the Opera
Famed composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has inked a unique deal with label giant Universal Music Group to bring his catalog, which includes songs from Cats, Evita, Phantom of the Opera, and Jesus Christ Superstar, to the digital world.
Universal Music will have exclusive worldwide digital and mobile rights to his entire catalog. Universal will in turn distribute the catalog to digital download stores and ringtone providers. Universal reportedly paid £10 million ($18.88 million) for the digital rights to the catalog.
The deal means that tunes from the new London production of Evita will be made available online at the same time that the physical release of the cast album hits retail stores. The deal also covers songs from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Starlight Express.
"I am delighted to be able to announce these significant deals between the Really Useful Group and Universal Music and thrilled that my entire catalogue can now be downloaded," Webber said in a statement. "I say this although the bulk of my own music collection is on vinyl!"
