Throngs of US concertgoers have paid top dollar to see Madonna ride a studded mechanical bull, gyrate around in a leotard, and take part in a mock crucifixion scene, making the Material Mom's Confessions tour the top-grossing concert series of the summer, according to new data from Billboard Boxscore.
Madonna's US summer tour grossed more than $80 million for 32 shows and has maintained that momentum on its recent European leg, according to Billboard data for the period between May 1 through August 20.
The Soul 2 Soul II tour of the country, from husband-and-wife duo of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, ranked second on the list with $77 million. And in another sign of country music's strong live draw, Kenny Chesney pulled in $44 million during that period to rank third, while Rascal Flatts took in $18 million in tickets.
Billboard said that concert-ticket sales are up over last summer with reported grosses of $695.9 million, compared to $648.5 million for the same period, despite that there were nearly 1,000 less concerts this summer compared to last summer.
