Dave Matthews Band eyes hits

Band reaches out to fans for input on a compilation "to fulfill an obligation to their label."

Obliged by its label to release a greatest-hits compilation, the Dave Matthews Band is reaching out to its fans with a survey of tracks to include in the best-of package.

The compilation is an apparent requirement under the deal the band signed with RCA Records in 2004.

"Dave Matthews Band will be releasing a Greatest Hits record in the near future in order to fulfill an obligation to their label, RCA Records," the band wrote in an e-mail to fans and posted on its Web site. "In order to shape the greatest gits combination of studio/live songs into the best possible release, DMB would like to gather feedback from its dedicated fan base."

The band posted a survey where fans can pick their 10 favorite DMB songs, as well as a show date if the version they like best is a live version.

No release date has been announced. The group is also at work on a new studio album, which will be the follow-up to 2005's Stand Up.

The band's ongoing tour will run through September 23 in Charlottesville, Virginia. It will also open an October 20 show in El Paso for the Rolling Stones. The group previously opened some European shows for the rockers in 1998; Matthews' duet with Mick Jagger on "Memory Motel" was recorded for the Stones' live album No Security.
