Gorillaz, guests rock UK festival
Eight-piece band comes out from behind curtain for five-night swing at opera house in Manchester, performing Demon Days in its entirety.
Out from behind their cartoon-character personas, Gorillaz and a slew of big-name guests are in the midst of a five-night string of unique performances at the inaugural Manchester International Festival.
The eight-piece band is playing through Saturday at the Opera House in Manchester, but instead of toiling away behind a screen on to which their animated alter-egos are projected as usual, the band played in front of the screen last night, albeit on a dimly lit stage, according to the Manchester Evening News.
For nightly full performances of the group's smash album Demon Days, group leaders Blur frontman Damon Albarn and producer DJ Danger Mouse invited all of the album's guest contributors to Manchester.
In addition to massive children's and gospel choirs, Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder, De La Soul, Roots Manuva, Ike Turner, Neneh Cherry, Martina Topley Bird, and Pharcyde rapper Bootie Brown performed along with the band last night, according to the Evening News.
All of the shows are sold out. Demon Days, the group's second album, has sold three million copies worldwide to date.
Prior to last night's performance Albarn told Radio 4, "It is the only time we're ever going to play this record in its entirety. We felt that Demon Days was such a complete record that it could really be played in one sitting. Almost in the same way you'd re-create a film score."
