Info
For this CD, which is greatly expanded from the original LP, Anita O'Day sings standards associated with other musicians, including "Four" (Miles Davis), "Early Autumn" (Stan Getz), "Four Brothers" (Woody Herman), "Sing, Sing, Sing" (Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa) and "Peanut Vendor" (Stan Kenton). Some of the material is unusual for a singer to interpret, but O'Day, one of the top jazz vocalists of the decade, improvises when the lyrics are not that strong (or barely exist). The backup by the Russ Garcia Orchestra is not all that memorable, but the focus is entirely on the vocalist, and O'Day really comes through. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Coldplay, EMI top Web music winners
London awards show honors innovative digital marketing campaigns, Web sites, and music services.
Coldplay and its record label dominated the BT Digital Music Awards in London last night, winning three prizes for their use of the Internet to promote their latest album, X&Y, and to build an online fan community.
A panel of judges and more than 500,000 online votes tabbed Coldplay.com as the People's Choice Award for the Best Official Web Site, and the band's label, EMI, won for Best Digital Marketing for the promotion of X&Y.
Coldplay also won for Best Online Community for Coldplayer.com, which features an interactive radio station with the band's favorite songs from other artists as well as band diaries, new videos, games, and photos.
EMI's Gorillaz--the band of former Blur front man Damon Albarn and DJ Danger Mouse--garnered Top Online Band overall and Best Dance Artist. The band's public image--in videos and public performances--is a group of virtual cartoon characters, and EMI has relied heavily on the Web to promote the band.
The Best Digital Music Store went to--surprise, surprise--Apple's iTunes, while Napster to Go, the subscription-based music download service that lets subscribers transfer songs to their portable players for a monthly fee, took home Best Innovation.
James Blunt won Best Pop Artist, while the Stereophonics won the award for Best Rock Artist. U2's "Vertigo" was voted Favorite Download Single and The Magic Numbers--who performed at the event at Hammersmith Palais--took home the award for Soundtrack of 2005 for Love Me Like You.
The BT Digital Music Awards, in its fourth year, has grown each year as the importance of the Internet has spiked for artists and their record labels.
