San Francisco-based startup Doppelganger creates virtual hangout space for young fans of girl-pop sextet.

Doppelganger, a new San Francisco-based company that creates virtual, AOL instant-messenger (AIM)-based hangouts, launched its first such club today with the PCD Music Lounge.
Users are represented in the nightclub-esque lounge by their chosen avatar, and they have a range of activities to choose from, including chatting with other users, walking around, listening to Pussycat Dolls' songs--even doing the "robot" dance.
Doppelganger hopes to capitalize on AOL's huge AIM user base of 43 million customers, as well as the popularity of the Pussycat Dolls, who have sold more than 1.3 million copies of their debut album, PCD, in the US.
"The current generation of teens practically live on the AIM service," Doppelganger CEO Andrew Littlefield said in a statement. "Doppelganger's single purpose is to create a cool place for folks to hang out and chat online. There's no cover charge, your friends are here, there's great music, and we never close."
